Feds detain 48 Haitian migrants on uninhabited island off Puerto Rican coast

U.S. federal authorities mentioned Wednesday that they detained 48 Haitian migrants who have been deserted by smugglers on an uninhabited island between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

U.S. Customs and Border Safety mentioned park rangers on Mona Island alerted authorities to the arrival of 41 males and 7 ladies.

Haitian migrants are more and more being dropped off on the rugged island surrounded by treacherous waters as they flee poverty and gang violence consuming their nation.

In June 2022, a minimum of 5 Haitian migrants died and 68 others have been rescued after authorities mentioned smugglers dropped the group off in waters close to Mona Island.
